SPC Flooring Wear Layer Guide: 0.3mm vs 0.5mm

SPC Flooring Wear Layer Guide: 0.3mm vs 0.5mm

The wear layer is the transparent surface above the printed decor film. For most SPC flooring programs, 0.3mm is used for standard residential ranges, while 0.5mm is the safer choice for higher-traffic residential and light-commercial projects. Importers should select it together with total plank thickness, surface finish, click system and backing rather than treating it as a stand-alone quality grade.

The table describes common market positioning, not a universal warranty. Final suitability depends on the complete product specification and the conditions at the installation site.

What Importers Should Confirm

Before comparing quotations, keep these items on the same specification sheet:

  • Total plank thickness: commonly 4mm, 5mm or 6mm in the Roovtech range.
  • Wear layer: 0.3mm or 0.5mm.
  • Backing: IXPE or EVA where required.
  • Surface: wood grain, stone look or embossed texture.
  • Installation: click-system profile and fitting sample.
  • Packaging: pieces per carton, square metres per carton, carton marking and pallet plan.

A lower quotation is not directly comparable if the wear layer, backing or click system is different. Buyers should label every sample with the same specification used on the quotation and purchase order.

For the relationship between board thickness and installation use, see the SPC flooring thickness guide.

Wear Layer Is Not Total Thickness

Wear layer thickness controls surface protection. Total plank thickness affects rigidity, the feel underfoot and tolerance of minor subfloor variation. A thicker board does not automatically have a thicker wear layer, so both values should appear separately in the quotation.

For example, a buyer may compare a 5mm board with a 0.3mm wear layer against a 4mm board with a 0.5mm wear layer. Neither specification is automatically better: the correct choice depends on traffic, target price, installation conditions and the intended sales channel.

Sample And Order Confirmation

For a two-level catalogue, many importers use 0.3mm for the standard residential line and 0.5mm for project or upgraded products. Keep the colour code, surface texture, total thickness, wear layer and backing consistent across the sample board, price list and purchase order.

Before bulk production, check:

  1. The labelled wear-layer and total-thickness specification.
  2. Colour and embossing under normal local lighting.
  3. Click fit using boards from the supplied sample set.
  4. Carton labels and packing details.
  5. Any required test reports for the destination market or project.

FAQ

Is 0.3mm wear layer suitable for residential SPC flooring?

It is commonly used for standard residential and price-sensitive wholesale ranges. Suitability still depends on the full product specification and expected traffic.

When should a buyer choose 0.5mm?

It is generally more appropriate for higher-traffic homes, hotel rooms, offices and light-commercial projects, or when the distributor needs a clearly upgraded product line.

Does a thicker SPC board always have a thicker wear layer?

No. Total plank thickness and wear-layer thickness are separate specifications and should be checked independently.

Can Roovtech provide both options?

Roovtech can support 0.3mm and 0.5mm wear-layer options, together with sample boards, colour selection and OEM packaging discussion.
